RFU Ranks

This article has been put together to give you some background on how our ranking system works.

As you work through the different reports, you will notice various types of ranks have been included.

Ranks are designed to give coaches and players a quick snapshot of how a specific group, player, or academy has performed compared to their counterparts.

All of the ranks you will see are based on the athlete's performance against their peers in the academies

These athlete ranks are the foundations of the leaderboards that will follow so it is important to explain how we calculated them.

INDIVIDUAL ATHLETE RANK

To rank them overall we use the median value of all their ranks, as any extremely poor or great ranking could have a huge influence over their overall rank if we chose to use the mean.

For example, if an athlete ranked #1 in one test, #12 in another then finally #33 then the median value of #12 would be taken as their rank value and this would be ranked against all other athletes rank value.

We have also only given athletes an overall rank if they have completed 4 or more of the tests. This is to stop an athlete who has ranked #1 in the only test they have completed being ranked top of all academies.

In the ranking system, we have only used the tests that have RFU-approved standards (in this case standards for U18s). The tests we are ranking on are below:

40m sprint - 10m/20m/30m/40m Split

CMJ - Jump Height

CMJ - Peak Power/BM (W/kg)

CMJ - Peak Power (W)

Bronco - Total time

OVERALL ACADEMY RANK

The rank the academy achieved as a whole (#1 being the best) using a "rank of ranks" taken from the academy ranks across all the tests with RFU standards.

PLAYER TYPE RANK

Uses the RFU position category standard groups (i.e.) Back Row - Momentum) to rank the players and the academy (#1 = best) across all the tests with RFU standards.

When you click on "Athlete League Table" you will get each individual athlete's overall ranks for the tests completed (their latest achieved). Both the overall rank and the player type rank are shown at a glance. If you want to see the breakdown of these ranks then click on the "Ranking Breakdown" button

When you click on "Academy League Table" you will see your ranks across all the tests completed (the latest achieved). Both the overall rank and the player type rank are shown at a glance. You can also see where your academy ranks overall taking into consideration their ranks across all measurements for which there are RFU standards provided.
